Two nights ago we tied to the town wharf in Black Tickle. The town appears to be suffering greatly from a lack of jobs, and zero economy.

We are back in Battle Harbour, after traveling continuously since leaving Hopedale last Sunday. The diesel engine is peachy keen. Red Bay tomorrow (?)

The icebergs are easy to avoid, it is the "growlers", the "bergy bits" that are the concern:
The diesel engine heat exchanger finally arrived yesterday, and we installed it A-OK. We are ready to head south, either today in yucky weather, or tomorrow (Sunday) in possibly better weather and wind. Alas, we didn't make it to the Torngat Mountains, the calendar now prohibits it (apologies to those looking for adventure...). On the bright side, we met a lot of people here in Hopedale.

The Westerbeke diesel engine heat exchanger gave up the ghost about 50 miles north of Hopedale. We had to turn around and go back to Hopedale, and are now cooling our heels waiting for a new heat exchanger to arrive from the States (well, just the one, Massachusetts). This might be the high water mark in Labrador...

Hopedale has a Moravian mission that is still in use and dates back to the 1700s, with buildings still standing dating to the early 1800s. The mission and detail photos (well, door knobs...):

Makkovic is the nicest town that we have visited thus far. It has good employment, multi-generational families, many kids and about 1:40 yard trampoline to citizen ratio, no drugs, no crime.

And, importantly, we actually had a summer day in Labrador, two days ago! Not to complain, but the downside is millions and millions of mosquitoes (haven't seen the black flies yet...):
We are now in Cartwright, plugging away north. Tomorrow we head toward Hopedale.

The abandoned whaling station at Hawkes Harbour. It was established in the first of the 1900s, and burned down in 1959. At its peak it could process 15 whales per day, and employed up to 400 people in harvesting and processing whales.
